1.1 Safety and Security

The best possible precaution should be taken at all times, to maintain the safety and security of the guests, to prevent damage or theft of their property and possessions. Emergency information, procedures and after hours contacts for assistance should be clearly displayed in English, multilingual, if possible (dependant on the customer profile of the establishment).

A person responsible for safety and security should be on call 24-hours a day. To provide safety, security and comfort for guests, lighting needs to be adequate throughout all public areas, particularly stairways and car parks.

Just to update you on our recent re-grading at EagleRockGuesthouse As you know, we are situated in one of the best locations for a Durban North Bed & Breakfast facility. I am pleased to report that we retained our 3 star grade.

Definitions for Grading Purposes

Durban North Bed & Breakfast - accommodation is provided in a family (private) home and the owner/manager lives in the house or on the property. Breakfast must be served. Bathroom facilities may or may not be en-suite and/or private. In general, the guest shares the public areas with the host family. Shaun McCleland and Gen have really enjoyed this aspect of our EagleRockGuesthouse

Country House - is a large Guest House, usually situated in natural, peaceful surroundings such as near a nature reserve, a forest, a lake etc. It offers all the services of a hotel, including dinner. Shaun McClelland's B&B is not a Country House, but has natural, peaceful surroundings such as near a nature reserve, a forest and Durban North Beachwood Golf Course in front of the garden.

Guest House - can be an existing home, a renovated home or a building that has been specifically designed to provide overnight accommodation. A guest house will have public areas for the exclusive use of its guests. A guest house is a commercial operation enterprise and as such the owner or manager may live on the property. This criteria fits EagleRockGuesthouse and Shaun and Gene love it.

Hotel - provides accommodation to the traveling public, has a reception area, and offers at least a "breakfast room" or communal eating area. In general a hotel makes food and beverage services available to guests; these may be outsourced or provided by the hotel. Definitely not at EagleRockGuestHouse. Far better facilities at half the price as an hotel.

Lodge - an accommodation facility located in natural surroundings. The rates charged are usually inclusive of all meals and the experience offered at the lodge, with game drives, battlefield tours, etc. Although we are not a Lodge we can facilitate day outings

Only establishments that cater for transient guests (travelling public) will qualify for grading. This we have done and are happy with 3 star rating. Shaun McClelland finds this segment of the market are down to earth easy to please and there is an abundant market here

Well Praise God we maintained our 3 star rating last week with the annual inspection the grading board does. I feel this is a good thing as it prevents sloppiness in the industry and protects guests from fly by night operations that do not go for grading.

ESTABLISHMENT BENEFITS Graded organizations have the right and are required to display the Grading Council plaque outside their premises and the certificate inside their premises to display their star rating and indicate that they meet or exceed the Grading Council's requirements.

Graded organizations may use the Grading Council logo (star) in all their marketing collateral. All graded organizations will be listed on the Tourism Grading Council website with the following details: name of establishment, contact person, telephone and fax number, category, address, email address and web-site details with link to organization's website for reservation purposes. All graded establishments get a free listing in the annual TGCSA Accommodation Guide and advertising is also available. The TGCSA Accommodation Guide is the only accommodation guide distributed by SA Tourism via its call center and offices worldwide.
